John Dobra

Associate Professor of Economics, University of Nevada

John Dobra, Senior Fellow of the Fraser Institute, is the Founding Director of the Natural Resource Industry Institute and an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Nevada, Reno.

An expert in natural resource economics, Professor Dobra has served as a consultant for state and federal government agencies, corporations, and industry associations. He has also testified on several occasions in the Nevada Legislature and the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

Professor Dobra has a Ph.D. in economics from Virginia Tech and an M.Sc. in economics from Portland State University.

Divergent Mineral Rights Regimes

The current state of mineral law and policies related to mining non-fuel minerals, and public attitudes towards mining are substantially different in Canada and the United States. Yet from an historical perspective, these two countries started out with the same laws respecting mining and mineral rights. The obvious questions are how did the systems diverge, why, and what are the implications?
